Switch Vendors Call For Green Measurement Standards
May 21, 2008 — (GREEN DATA CENTER INFO) — ChannelWeb (www.crn.com) yesterday reported that network switching vendors want more standards around Green IT.
As “green” has become more and more of a buzzword in the switching market, vendors are trying to out-do each other in the field of power consumption. Or rather, lack thereof.
However, it is disputed exactly how the “greenness” of network equipment is measured. One thing many network switching vendors agree upon is that there needs to be some “standard of measure” in determining what’s green and not.
IDC Announces Green IT Forum West
May 21, 2008 — (GREEN DATA CENTER INFO) — IDC announced plans today for the IDC Green IT Forum West taking place June 10, 2008 at the Santa Clara Hilton in Santa Clara, CA.
This event follows a successful IDC Green IT Forum East, drawing 200 attendees to New York City on February 28th. IDC says the program is designed for senior IT, technology, procurement, and strategic planning executives tasked with managing the role of Green IT to effectively measure and capture market opportunities for energy efficient systems.
“Most IT executives get the message that a Green IT strategy is a good one, but many simply don’t know what it will cost”, says Vernon Turner, senior vice president at IDC, “Many are wrestling with the Green IT business case, and quickly back into the skeptic’s corner. However, if they look at a Green IT as an outcome from a Lean IT strategy, then it’s a different story.”

GSA considers data-center optimization
May 21, 2008 — (GREEN DATA CENTER INFO) — Federal Computer Week has reported the US government is moving toward making IT environments more energy-efficient, as the General Services Administration is conducting an analysis that could serve as the basis of a data center optimization effort.
Data center services are already part of the government-wide Networx telecommunications and network contract. The optimization effort would expand on that, said John Johnson, assistant commissioner of the Federal Acquisition Service’s Office of Integrated Technology Services.
GSA is partnering with the Environmental Protection Agency and the Energy Department on the possible initiative
