Web Host Sharkspace Uses ‘Green’ Servers
May 21, 2008 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Web hosting provider SharkSpace (sharkspace.com) announced on Monday it has moved its entire server fleet to new energy efficient Dell servers, in an effort to better protect the environment.
The company says that new Dell servers consume up to 25 percent less energy than previous generations, and when coupled with performance gains, this results in up to a 300 percent increase in performance per watt over previous generations.
In addition to the new server fleet and lighting, Sharkspace says it will also cut its energy use by converting its paper files to electronic versions through document imaging technology. The conversion is expected to cut the web host’s paper use by half.

Rackspace Builds Green UK Facility
May 20, 2008 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Web hosting provider Rackspace Hosting (rackspace.com) announced on Tuesday it has built a carbon neutral data center in Slough, Berkshire, UK.
The facility will be powered by a renewable energy sources from the UK’s largest dedicated bio-mass energy plant, which is operated by Scottish and Southern Energy (scottish-southern.co.uk). The plant burns wood chips, waste paper and fiber fuel to create electricity, hot water and steam.
Converted from a former warehouse on the Slough Trading Estate, the facility will provide 55,000 square feet of net technical space. Equipment is being installed in the first data hall, while the first customers are set to go live in June.

365 Main Presenting at Green Business Event
May 14, 2008 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — One of the hosting businesses responsible for most of the green hosting headlines reported this week that it would be among the presenters at a new green tradeshow event taking place next week in Los Angeles.
365 Main (365main.com) said Tuesday that its VP of marketing and strategy Miles Kelly will speak at the inaugural Green West Conference and Exposition (greenwestexpo.com), held May 20-22 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. He will discuss the cost savings created by energy efficient data centers.
Kelly will participate in a session called “Trends in Achieving Energy Efficiency,” in which he will focus on data centers. Other panelists will address topics including energy management in large commercial buildings and energy efficient practices in the office of the future.
The session will take place Tuesday, May 20 from 2:30 p.m. to 3:45 p.m.

Internap Plans Green Boston Facility
May 14, 2008 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Internet business solutions provider Internap Network Services (internap.com) announced on Friday it plans to add around 15,000 square feet of colocation at a new stand-alone 45,000 square foot facility adjacent to its existing Boston data center.
This week has seen more than the usual number of new data center announcements. On Thursday alone, Technical Real Estate announced it has started construction on a new 32,000 square foot facility in Sydney, Australia while Commtouch launched a new data center in Hong Kong.
According to the press release, the expansion will help Internap meet strong demand for its bundled Internet solutions. The first phase of is expected to be complete in the fourth quarter of this year.

Hosting.com Buys Green Energy Blocks
May 14, 2008 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Joining in the widespread push toward a greener hosting business, hosting provider Hosting.com (hosting.com) reported Friday that it is working with Louisville Gas and Electric, purchasing “green” energy that will offset more than 1,500 tons of carbon emissions annually.
Declaring its intention of “leading the commercial sector in green initiatives,” Hosting.com says it will buy 208 “green energy blocks” for each of the next 12 months.
Each of the $13 blocks accounts for 1,000 kilowatt hours of energy produced from local renewable resources. Hosting.com says its total purchase over the next year is “equivalent to planting approximately 1,310 acres of trees, or removing 304 cars from the road.”
