NTT Data Announces Japanese Green Data Center

June 26, 2008 — (GREEN DATA CENTER INFO) — NTT Data Corp (nttdata.co.jp) announced plans of building a green data center with a DC power system, which will be available for use starting in October, reported Tech-On this week.

The Japanese company unveiled this announcement at GridWorld 2008 (idg.co.jp/expo/grid/english/), which ran June 24-25 at Tokyo International Forum.

The DC power system is a technology utilized to minimize power loss by reducing the number of times of AC-DC/DC-AC conversion. Currently, uninterruptible power supply systems (UPS) used at data centers are driven by a direct current. AC-DC and DC-AC conversions are repeated for a minimum of three times, including conversion, inside the server machine before driving the microprocessor.

Data Center Operators Share Energy Saving Tips

June 23, 2008 — (GREEN DATA CENTER INFO) — CIO (cio.com) reported this week that some of the biggest names in the data center industry will meet in Silicon Valley next week to share test results to help identify the most effective ways to reduce energy consumption.

The project has been organized by the Silicon Valley Leadership Group (svlg.net). Presenting about a dozen case studies include companies such as the U.S. Postal Service and Yahoo!

“One of the goals is to produce real-world data that will help other organizations decide which technologies they can implement to reduce power consumption and what savings they can hope to achieve from them,” said Teresa Tung, a senior researcher with Accenture (accenture.com), which plans to publish a free report on its Web site next Thursday based on the results.

Terremark’s new NAP of the Capital Region

June 23, 2008 — (GREEN DATA CENTER INFO) — ZDNet blogger Heather Clancy reported yesterday that Terremark (terremark.com) is on target with its new green data center set to open this Thursday near Washington, DC.

Clancy first wrote about Terremark Worldwide’s new NAP of the Capital Region in Culpepper, VA, last fall.

In last week’s interview with Norm Laudermilch, the managing director of the facility, Clancy learned about many design points including rotary UPSes, variable-speed fans, modularity, cooling innovation and utility computing support.

IBM’s Greenest Data Center in North America

June 20, 2008 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Amid what is now quite a steady stream of “green” data center news, IBM (ibm.com) reported this week that it has opened what it considers its greenest data center in North America.

IBM, one of the companies making the most noise in the green data center space, said Tuesday that it had opened a 115,000 square-foot facility in Boulder, Colorado that includes 70,000 square feet of usable raised floor space.

The press release doesn’t specify exactly how much the Boulder data center cost, but the company says the project was one part of a larger $350 million investment in the Boulder area to “help meet customer demand worldwide for green data centers.”
