Cisco’s TechTV to air Data Center Efficiency Episode

Otherwise, fasten your fun-belts!
Cisco’s TechWise TV is set to “air” an episode called “Energy Efficiency in the Data Center,” this Thursday, August 21 at 11:00 a.m. Eastern, which ought to be enough of a reason for a blog post.
It took a little bit of digging for me to figure out exactly what TechWise TV is, and apparently I’m a little bit behind on the subject, because it’s been running since September of 2006.
It’s a TV-show style web broadcast produced by Cisco and covering a range of technology topics. Most of the time it deals with Cisco products, but apparently not always.

Video: The Green Data Center using Liquid Cooling techniques
Liquid Computing is leading the way in greening the datacenter. By reducing power consumption, stabilizing server-room temperature using liquid cooling techniques, and reducing the amount of racks needed, this is true green computing!

IBM Builds Green Facility in Canada
June 11, 2008 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — In what appears to be a part of its environmentally friendly “Project Big Green” initiative, IBM (ibm.com) announced on Wednesday it has partnered with web hosting provider RackForce Networks (rackforce.com) and gigaCENTER Services to help build Canada’s largest “green” data center.
There has been a great quantity of data center announcements the past few weeks, many of which have been focused around “green” data center initiatives. In May, Rackspace Hosting reported it had built a carbon neutral data center in the UK while Equinix announced that all four of its Silicon Valley Internet Business Exchange centers had received certification from the Bay Area Green Business Program.
Towards the end of the month, Yahoo! (yahoo.com) completed a turn-key data center lease agreement with Digital Realty Trust and the two companies were targeting the project towards achieving LEED Gold certification status as a “green” data center.

Video: The Eco-Friendly Sun Modular Datacenter S20 (Project Blackbox)
June 4, 2008 — (GREEN DATA CENTER INFO) — The Sun MD makes good sense ecologically and economically. It can help reduce CO2 emissions by over 1459 metric tons per platform over a five year deployment, which can help businesses meet new, more stringent environmental regulations.
Thanks to its unique closed-loop water cooling system, the Sun MD is more than 40% more energy efficient at cooling than a typical datacenter. With high efficiency water cooling in a small enclosed area, much less energy is consumed per compute unit than in an air-conditioned datacenter. Energy costs can be reduced even more by locating the unit near less expensive power sources.
Because of its commitment to eco responsibility and reducing eWaste, Sun Microsystems will take back any unit and its contents, from anywhere in the world, and reuse, recycle or dispose of it in an environmentally responsible way.
