HP Tops Green Data Center Study
By David Hamiton, theWHIR.com
October 15, 2008 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Hewlett-Packard (www.hp.com) has been ranked at the top of the latest “Green Data Center” Vendor Matrix, an analytical tool developed by ABI Research (www.abiresearch.com) as a clear rating of vendor position in specific markets.
According to ABI Research’s announcement Wednesday, IBM (www.ibm.com) and Cisco (www.cisco.com) claimed the second and third spots respectively in the company’s new evaluation of data center equipment vendor efforts to improve energy conservation and reduce environmental impact.
ABI Research’s new evaluation method is the latest in a field that is growing in visibility and momentum as organizations like The Green Grid (www.thegreengrid.org) have been making strides in developing similar metrics and best practices for data centers. Also, LEED and Energy Star certifications have also provided guidance for data center operators on how to develop greener IT strategies. In May, data center operator Digital Realty Trust (www.digitalrealty.com) said it was the first data center firm to publish energy efficiency data about its facilities using the Power Usage Effectiveness metric. Cisco’s TechTV to air Data Center Efficiency Episode
(Note: If you want to skip what I say and go right to the sign-up page, here’s your link)
Otherwise, fasten your fun-belts!
Cisco’s TechWise TV is set to “air” an episode called “Energy Efficiency in the Data Center,” this Thursday, August 21 at 11:00 a.m. Eastern, which ought to be enough of a reason for a blog post.
It took a little bit of digging for me to figure out exactly what TechWise TV is, and apparently I’m a little bit behind on the subject, because it’s been running since September of 2006.
It’s a TV-show style web broadcast produced by Cisco and covering a range of technology topics. Most of the time it deals with Cisco products, but apparently not always.

Switch Vendors Call For Green Measurement Standards
May 21, 2008 — (GREEN DATA CENTER INFO) — ChannelWeb (www.crn.com) yesterday reported that network switching vendors want more standards around Green IT.
As “green” has become more and more of a buzzword in the switching market, vendors are trying to out-do each other in the field of power consumption. Or rather, lack thereof.
However, it is disputed exactly how the “greenness” of network equipment is measured. One thing many network switching vendors agree upon is that there needs to be some “standard of measure” in determining what’s green and not.
