Green Survey Finds Lack Of Funds

September 3, 2008 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — While a majority of chief information officers and other senior IT executives strongly agree that an environmentally friendly data center will become mission-critical in the coming years, yet many “lack the ‘green’ to go green,” according to a new survey.

Israeli server and storage switching and software developer Voltaire (voltaire.com) released the results of its survey Wednesday, finding almost 90 percent of executives polled said making their data centers more environmentally friendly is crucial in meeting their companies’ business objectives in 2009, but 76 percent said they do not have a committed budget for a greening policy.

The survey, which queried CIOs, chief technology officers and other IT executives who attended the 2008 MIT Sloan CIO Symposium, also reported that 57 percent of respondents said going green gives them a competitive advantage.

“It appears from these findings that senior IT management is still in the planning phases, and they will need to prioritize funding for these important greening initiatives,” Voltaire global sales and general manager executive vice president Patrick Guay said in a statement. (more…)

UPS Is Delivered Green Award

September 2, 2008 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Data center research organization the Uptime Institute (uptimeinstitute.org) has given the United Parcel Service’s (ups.com) Windward data center a Green Enterprise IT Award based on the facility’s energy conservation measures including natural cooling.

Located in Alpharetta, Georgia, the Windward UPS facility won the “Facilities Site Physical Infrastructure (Power and Cooling) Overhead” category in the inaugural Uptime Institute Green Enterprise IT Awards to be awarded every year.

According to a report from TMCnet (tmcnet.com), UPS’s energy efficient data center includes two centrifugal chillers providing 2,000 tons of cooling and two absorption chillers providing an additional 800 tons each. More importantly, the center boasts a 650,000-gallon thermal storage tank thatdissipates heat cost effectively and provides 20 hours of emergency cooling. (more…)

Hostivia Launches Eco-Initiative

August 28, 2008 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Linux-based hosting provider Hostivia (hostivia.com) has launched a new ‘green’ initiative to minimize its environmental impact, and offer shared and reseller Web Hosting customers an environmentally friendly alternative.

On Thursday, Nevada-based R&D Technologies subsidiary Hostivia announced that the initiative is focused on improving data center energy efficiency. All future server deployments will use Intel, Supermicro, and Seagate components designed to use less power. The company estimates that new server configurations will reduce power usage by 30 to 40 percent.

“Going green is about more than just corporate responsibility, it’s also good business,” said Rob Tyree, Hostivia CTO. “As we researched green hardware configurations, we learned we can deliver more powerful and reliable hosting solutions while trimming off a huge portion of our energy usage. TrendPoint’s Four-Point “Green Data Center” Plan

We received a very long press release this week from TrendPoint Systems, a company that produces a “turn-key data center energy management solution.”

It’s not a company we’re especially familiar with at the WHIR, but with TrendPoint’s fairly singular focus on data center energy efficiency and carbon monitoring, it’s an organization that ought to be thoroughly on the radar of the hosting business.

Along with its TrendOne, EnerSure and EnviroCube products, which are generally hardware offerings designed to monitor environmental conditions and energy efficiency in enterprise data centers, the company appears to be actively publishing white papers on the general subject of data center efficiency, which makes it especially relevant to just about anyone operating a data center.

I know at the WHIR, we’ve got a pretty heavy appetite for published “green data center” information at the moment. (more…)
