ADC Building $100M Green Data Center

June 17, 2008 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — According to a report appearing last week in the Sacramento Business Journal, data center startup Advanced Data Centers (adatacenters.com) is well into the construction of its first facility, intended to be particularly environmentally friendly.

The Sacramento facility is being built at McLellan Business Park, which, according to the ADC website is located on the McLellan Airforce Base, a facility that apparently affords the data center “on-site security, emergency services and full service airport.”

The data center will occupy 237,000 square feet, and include 11 private data center suites of 10,000 square feet each.

ADC president Michael Cohen tells the Sacramento Business Journal that the goal of the project is to create the most efficient data center possible, both for the purpose of the company’s bottom line and for its impact on the environment.

Yahoo Leases DRT Data Center to go Green

May 29, 2008 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Data center operator Digital Realty Trust (digitalrealtytrust.com) announced on Wednesday it has completed a turn-key data center lease agreement with Yahoo (yahoo.com).

As part of the deal, Yahoo will establish “an advanced corporate data center” in Digital Realty Trust’s turn-key data center facility and the two companies will target the project towards achieving LEED Gold certification status as a “green” data center.

“Yahoo! is committed to being an environmentally responsible business,” says Kevin Timmons, VP of operations at Yahoo. “We build our data centers based on a rigorous analysis of key components such as geographical location, climates, building materials, cost performance, and use of alternative-energy systems.”

Rackspace Builds Green UK Facility

May 20, 2008 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Web hosting provider Rackspace Hosting (rackspace.com) announced on Tuesday it has built a carbon neutral data center in Slough, Berkshire, UK.

The facility will be powered by a renewable energy sources from the UK’s largest dedicated bio-mass energy plant, which is operated by Scottish and Southern Energy (scottish-southern.co.uk). The plant burns wood chips, waste paper and fiber fuel to create electricity, hot water and steam.

Converted from a former warehouse on the Slough Trading Estate, the facility will provide 55,000 square feet of net technical space. Equipment is being installed in the first data hall, while the first customers are set to go live in June.
